When either Geoff or I run into old college friends we always get the same reply..."you
still live in College Station." Yep, we do. And we really love it. We live far enough away from campus that it doesn't really affect us - and its not like you see all 60,000 students at one time - Unless you go to a football game. We live on a great street with awesome neighbors and we love the small town feel of our city.....The only time I am really reminded of how quickly the years are going by is every fall - when the signs show up on stores welcoming the new freshman class....this year its the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2013! Holy cow! Yesterday I had to run into Walmart and had to smile as I passed a small group of guys - all with shaved heads - buying cleaning products for their dorm rooms. (For those non-aggies reading this...they were Freshman corps boys, easily identifiable by those clean heads!) It seems like just yesterday I was buying things for my dorm room and looking forward to the start of my Aggie life.
Today, I had a photoshoot on campus - in front of the building at the main entrance. There is a flagpole out front that I stood in front of for a few minutes. That flagpole changed my life. My senior year of high school my mom and I went on a driving tour and visited schools. First stop - Southwest Texas State (now just Texas State). After my visit there I thought, yep I can go here. Next on the trip College Station. We didn't really know where to go when we got to campus, so we stopped at the big white building at the main entrance. 2 corps guys (at the time I didn't even know what the corps was) were standing down at the flagpole...they asked me to come over there. They were 1 guy short and needed someone to hold a flag for them while they folded another one. As I stood there holding the Texas flag, I looked up and saw what was written at the top of the flagpole, on all 4 sides: "Lux". 'That's my last name', I told them. They replied with, 'well guess you are meant to be here.' And that was it. We toured the school, I got a real quick introduction to the traditions (hadn't ever heard of any of them before) and I was done. Told mom we could head home, I didn't need to see any more schools. This morning, I smiled as I glanced at my maiden name up there on that flagpole. I like to think i would have become an aggie no matter what was written up there, but I know that it definitely had something to do with my journey to Aggieland.
So, here I am 14 years later and I still call Aggieland my home. While its a completely different experience now than it was back then, I still love everything about this place. Yes, I
STILL live in College Station. I am going to raise my girls to be Aggies and maybe even influence some nieces and nephews to come this way one day too! ;-)
Welcome class of 2013. I am looking forward to the class of 2029 (jerra) and 2031 (jorja)
